A string of 32 islands and cays makes up the nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. St. Vincent is one of the least touristy islands in the Caribbean—an unpretentious and relatively quiet island, where fishermen get up at the crack of dawn to drop their nets into the sea, working people conduct business in town, and farmers work their crops in the countryside.

Water reigns in this chain of 32 unblemished islands and cays. Leisure sailors, snorkelers, divers, sea turtles and six types of dolphins are among the most common visitors to the coral-rich Tobago Cays and nine inhabited islands, where the privacy is a prize for those who simply want to get away from it all.

Even the primary landmark of the “mainland” of St. Vincent shies from too much attention, with thick banks of clouds covering the peak of La Soufrière Volcano. The Falls of Baleine also hides in modesty; the spectacular cascades are accessible only by boat. On the other hand, the oldest botanical garden in the Caribbean, found in downtown Kingston, is hypnotizingly beautyful and flants it.

Halfway between St. Vincent and Grenada, the Spice Island, lies Canouan Island, proud to call itself one of the chain’s larger islands at three square miles. Home to an exhilarating Jim Fazio designed18-hole championship golf course, with every hole overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the serenity of this island is matched only by nearby Palm Island, a 135 acre destination whose name is derived from the many coconut palms planted by Americans John “Johnny Coconuts” and Mary Caldwell in order to reclaim the island’s lower lying interior. Local ferries let visitors trade island for island, but peace and solitude are a constant.

Richmond Vale

  • At Richmond Vale Academy we aim to produce all our own food. We have an organic garden where we practice permaculture. Everyone at the academy are farmers and do their turns in the food production, whether its improving the water collection system, moving the chicken tractors, collecting eggs, improving the compost, harvesting sousop, producing jam or making a salad for lunch.
